Summary
An Interview with Ed Temple: Coach, Tennessee State University Tigerbelle Track and Field Teams (1950-1994)

Edward Stanley Temple coached the Tennessee State University (TSU) Tigerbelles track and field team from 1950 to 1994 (https://library3.tnstate.edu/library/temple/templebio.html). During those years, he led Tigerbelle teams to 34 national championships and coached 3 U.S. Olympic track and field teams. Forty of his Tigerbelles were Olympians, among whom were legendary athletes such as Wilma Rudolph Eldridge, Wyomia Tyus, Lucinda Williams Adams, and Edith McGuire Duvall. In this 2008 interview, Coach Temple tells the story of the early years of the Tigerbelles, describes their unrivaled records of achievements, and explains the effects of Title IX on women’s athletics, in general, and on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), in particular. He also reveals highs and lows of a career that included dealing with blatant sexism and racism as well as earning genuine appreciation and respect from a nation of admirers. This rare recording provides current and future generations a glimpse into the fascinating journey of an iconic coach at a prominent Historically Black University.
